Electrically insulated bearings are used especially in industrial electric motors and generators to prevent the flow of electric current from the rotor through the bearing to the machine frame. Breakthroughs cause electrical erosion and deterioration of lubricant properties and lead to premature bearing destruction. The electrically insulated bearing can be made either by ceramic coating on the outer or inner ring or by using ceramic rolling elements ("hybrid bearings").
